Four Steps to a More Powerful Recruiting Strategy

The success of your business hinges on the quality of talent you bring into it. Maybe top talent is in short supply—or maybe you’re simply having a difficult time finding and hiring them. Whatever the case, without a solid recruiting strategy, it’s unlikely that the most qualified workers will come knocking at your door. That’s why you need to take steps to capture their attention and get them to apply for your open career opportunities. To do this, you’ll need to review your current recruiting strategy and possibly take steps to improve it. Here’s what you can do.

Four tips for upgrading your recruiting strategy

Yes, you’ve rewritten your job descriptions, kept up with your social media accounts and attended local job fairs. But to breathe new life into your recruitment process, consider these four steps:

  1. Spend time where the talent is. Our current work environment is very focused on the Internet, emails and plenty of screen time, but that isn’t necessarily the best way to reach candidates. Meeting with a candidate face-to-face can have a much bigger impact than Web-based interactions. Depending on the industry in which you’re searching, think about events relevant to this type of employee. Beyond job fairs, what niche conferences and meet-ups will have your top talent in attendance? Make plans to attend—or set up a booth, if possible—at these outings.
  2. Peddle job openings in unexpected places. Potential candidates may be familiar with your company, but may not think about the possibility of working for you. Include ads such as, “Interested in working for us? Contact us today to learn about open positions” in email signatures, on business cards, in the footers of brochures, etc. The more places you can pepper this statement in, the more likely qualified candidates will be to see it.
  3. Build a great company culture. When your company is great place to work, the word gets out. And positive word-of-mouth is a great marketing tool. Many candidates these days are looking for fun and engaging work environments that include flexible work scheduling, an on-site workout facility, interactive company events, attractive office décor, fun and relaxing break areas, great on-site food service, rich healthcare benefits… the list goes on and on. Do what you can to create a motivating company culture, and top talent will follow.
  4. Work with a staffing partner. Recruiters have access to a deep pool of talent that includes both active and passive candidates. They’re experts at finding, hiring and placing their clients with employees best suited to open positions. A staffing agency that specializes in your industry is a sure-fire way to increase your chances of finding the best talent available.
