While job searching, candidates often seek advice from their friends, family, and professional network. While there is a great deal of advice for job searchers out there, not all of it is good. Unfortunately, even the bad advice gets repeated, which can lead you astray in your job search. Here are a few examples of bad advice as well as what you should do instead:

Apply to as many jobs as you can find.

Quantity doesn’t equal quality. Unfortunately, many individuals believe that that more positions you apply to, the higher your chances are of securing a position. However, employers are looking for the most-qualified candidate for the position, so if your skills and background do not align with the position needs, you will be removed from a candidate pool. Instead, find jobs that you are qualified for and are in line with your career path. By focusing on a few positions at a time, it allows you to pay attention to the details.

You need to be 100% qualified to apply.

In truth, there are very few people who possess every single skill or quality highlighted in a job posting. Don’t be afraid to apply for a position if you don’t tick every item on the employer’s wish list. If you possess the majority of what they’re looking for, go ahead and send in an application.

You only need one resume.

Your resume should be fluid. You should edit your resume so it fits the position you’re applying for. It doesn’t need to be a completely unique document, but you should tailor your objective, work history, and skills to highlight the ones that the company is looking for. By customizing your resume for each position, you will be able to highlight your core competencies as they relate to the position’s requirements.

Include your entire career history.

If you are seasoned career professional, including your entire work history is unnecessary. For example, including the part-time jobs you had in high school are not relevant to your job search. Keep your resume’s work history pared down to positions that are most recent or relevant in your career. However, if you’ve held a number of positions that are relevant but don’t want them included on your resume, consider including them in your LinkedIn profile.

Each month at CSS, we have a “Purple Cow Award” that is given out to an internal employee. This award, and what is represents, is based on the book “Purple Cow” by Seth Godin.

A “Purple Cow” is someone who stands out
in a crowd for being remarkable.

An excerpt from the book reads:
“Cows, after you’ve seen one or two or ten, are boring. A Purple Cow, though… now that would be something. Godin defines a Purple Cow as anything phenomenal, counterintuitive, exciting… remarkable.”

In our CSS blog, you will see featured monthly a CSS Employee who receives this honor. This month, the recipients are Lesley Pearson and Chuck George!

Lesley is the current Branch Supervisor of our Philadelphia and King of Prussia offices. She started as a Staffing Specialist in our NJ Office in February 2008. She was promoted at the end of 2009 to Branch Supervisor.

Interesting Fact about Lesley:  One of her favorite things to do is food shop due to her love of cooking. She usually goes every Sunday with one of her girlfriends and makes it a 2 hour event! One of her favorite things to make is homemade soup.

Chuck is the current IT Recruiting Manager for CSS Technical Services in Media, PA. He started at CSS in November 2000, and his positions range from IT Recruiter to Sr. IT Recruiter to his current IT Recruiting Manager position. It will be 13 years at CSS for Chuck this November

Interesting Fact about Chuck:  Chuck went to Penn State, and during his time there danced twice in their Dance Marathon. Participants stay up for 46 hours straight, and can’t sit down, doing a line dance every hour. It’s the largest student run philanthropy in the nation. These marathons raise money for the Four Diamonds Fund which helps children with Cancer. The money aids the financial burden the families have as their child battles Cancer. His fraternity did not really participate at first, so he kick started their interest! He has continued to support Dance Marathon since graduation. This year Penn State raised over $12 million, and his fraternity raised over $125,000! Chuck is a proud supporter and honored to be a part of this wonderful cause!
