2015 Career Guide

2014 was the best year for job growth since 1999. By December, the unemployment rate was down to 5.8%. But don’t let the fact that there are fewer people looking for work slow you down. You still need to remain focused to have a successful job search for 2015. Here’s what the experts are predicting for the upcoming year:

Growing Career Fields

Economic Modeling Specialists Intl. collected and analyzed job data to name the best jobs for 2015. Seven of 10 of the jobs on the list, which was created based on supply and demand, are in the healthcare and information technology sectors. Well-paying positions include software development, network administration, registered nursing, and physical therapy.

Wage Predictions

In 2014, CNN reported growth in retail jobs, particularly at Wal-Mart and Kohl’s. However, they also noted that median wages in the retail profession were down by almost 15%. That trend could continue with other fields that employ younger workers, such as leisure and hospitality. Healthcare is the one sector where wages grew in 2014, although by a slim 2% margin.

Rise of the Gig Economy

Sites that help people rent out their cars and homes grew in popularity in 2014, and that same spirit of entrepreneurship is likely to continue in 2015. Many people are attracted to the idea of freelancing or temporary work. In a recent survey, 79% of millennials said they would consider quitting their full-time jobs for something more flexible. On the other side, 41% of hiring managers expect to be looking for temporary labor this year.
